Scar Removal Options

Old and new scars of all types can often improve with treatment. Many patients require a combination approach. Some scars may not respond to treatment, and our staff will take the time to explain to you the possible risks and benefits, as well as the likelihood of success. Treatment options include:

• Medical treatments include surgical revision and excision, and intralesional or topical therapy.

• Laser resurfacing is one of the most effective treatments for scars. With this procedure, thin layers of skin are removed, layer by layer, until the scar fades or disappears. At the same time the skin tightens to further smooth out the scar. In most cases, any necessary surgical treatment of scars is completed prior to laser resurfacing. The laser treatment is scheduled 3 to 12 weeks after the last surgical treatment to give the skin time to heal and remodel.

• Vascular lasers can be very useful for pink or red scars. These lasers work by targeting persistent redness and allow scar color to blend more naturally with surrounding normal skin. This intervention may require several treatment sessions.

• Microdermabrasion gently removes the thickened, uppermost layer of the scar. This treatment is well suited for softening shallow surface scars such as those caused by acne and chicken pox.
